China's first female spacewalker Liu Yang has passed away at the age of 41 after a long career in space exploration. The news was announced by the Chinese government on Monday.

Born in Shanghai in 1978, Liu graduated from Peking University with a degree in physics and astronomy before joining the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. She went on to become one of China's top astronauts, serving as a member of the Shenzhou IX mission in 2012 and the Shenzhou X mission in 2013.
